50 Years of Memories

Red, I just wanted to express my thanks to you for all you’ve done over the years.

I’m sure you remember back in the 50’s and even into the 60’s so many people slammed rock’n’roll. R and R was essentially good time music and it was so full of energy. I grew up in Seattle. I’m now retired and I’m 63.

I discovered you on CKWX in 1961. I followed you to C-FUN (the greatest call of any station anywhere). You set the tone for Vancouver radio the way Pat O’Day did in my hometown. You were my idols and in the 70’s, I got into radio, mostly in Spokane and Portland.

Thank you for the programming concepts of the Soundathons, the Wax Works, the Reactivated Flashbacks (I loved that expression so much better than KJR Classics). Vancouver radio was much more concerned with the MUSIC whereas KJR was more concerned about HUMOR.

I’ll never forget your talking up Roy Orbison at a time when to me he was just a hitmaker. In Spokane, I had the great opportunity to hang out with Roy after a performance at the Spokane Coliseum. We had a late night dinner at a chicken delight place in the valley. What a beautiful guy he was. I was totally in awe of him and I thought back to the early 60’s when you talked him up on the air.

I know you know the U.S. better than most Canadians but I would like to tell you that Canada is a great and beautiful country. I’ll never forget you and make no mistake, I don’t live in the past. At my age I’m beginning to reflect on how wonderful my life has been and my memories of you are a great part of it. Thanks Red!
