Red Around Town: May 3

It was great seeing Wayne Newton, the King of Las Vegas, at the Red Robinson Show Theatre. He is the consummate performer, and the 18-piece band was outstanding. During my interview for Global TV, Wayne mentioned his memories of the Cave Theatre Restaurant, where he appeared in April of 1965. How do I remember that date? An ardent fan showed up with a photo of Wayne and herself and the photo was dated. Wayne has fond memories of the club… Word is the Doo-Wop show at the Centre for the Performing Arts was a success, with some of the early 50s and 60s acts strutting their style. The acts included The Fleetwoods (Mr. Blue), The Edsels (Rama Lama Ding Dong), Gene Chandler (Duke of Earl), and many more. This is the same group of recording artists who have appeared on the PBS Doo-Wop series, one of the most successful musical programs in the history of PBS… Radio veteran Tom Jeffries, who hung up his headset except for the occasional radio show shortly after replacing Rick Honey on CKBD when that broadcaster passed away from cancer, has reappeared anchoring the 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. time slot on the mighty CKNW on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. You may refer to him now as the weekend Philip Till…Speaking of radio, my friend Michael Godin is celebrating the 11th anniversary of his radio show Treasure Island Oldies on May 4th. The show has grown, and is currently being carried on 102.7 FM CIWS, which is located just north of Toronto. The popular program is also now syndicated on FM, AM and Online radio stations via the Internet across the U.S.A., England and Sweden. Congratulations… U.S. General Colin Powell will make his first ever appearance in Vancouver on Thursday June 12th at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre. Powell will field questions from the audience after his presentation. Tickets at Ticketmaster… Congratulations to Steve Darling and his lovely wife on the birth of their first child, a baby girl they have named Hayley…Kudos to News 1130 for winning the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio, Television, News Directors Association International (RTNDA) for their spot news coverage of the July 2007 oil pipeline explosion at the edge of Burrard Inlet… An interesting item from Rogers (owners of Clear FM, News 1130, and Jack FM) relative to the new B.B.M. ratings, where it shows the adults 25-54 in the mornings are tops with Larry and Willy on Jack and George Gordon and Dianne Newman on News 1130 almost neck and neck in numbers… It’s a gas, but soon to run on empty. Brent Butt, writer, director and executive producer of the series Corner Gas, about life in a small Saskatchewan town, has called it quits after the show’s upcoming season. Production on the final 19 new episodes begins May 15th in Saskatchewan. The series finale will air in the spring of 2009. Brent is quoted as saying, “I wanted to exit gracefully, on top of our game, when we are at our prime, because that’s how I want viewers to remember Corner Gas at its very best”. The sitcom is seen in 26 countries worldwide…
