Country singer Blake Shelton has recorded Michael Bublé‘s Home, a song that took Michael to the top of the charts in 2005. Shelton’s country version is climbing the Hot Country charts. The country crooner said he found the song on his iPod and put it on his album. Any artist who travels a lot can relate to the song, as touring wears you out and you long for being home… Rogers Communications has sold CHNU/OMNI10, as ordered by the CRTC; and new owner S-VOX (parent company of Christian channel Vision TV and others) takes control this month. The locally produced The Standard is cancelled… Some major changes on radio row. Eric Samuels, program director of Crave FM and CISL AM 650, has cleaned out his desk and is moving on. The station is now owned by Astral Media out of Montreal, and both Samuels and former GM Gary Russell were part of the former Standard Broadcasting management. Russell left the operation over a month ago… Over at CKNW, Penny Daflos has joined the CKNW News Talk team. Up until recently Penny has been employed by CTV on a part time basis… Curtis Strange, who was responsible for bringing a major Victoria music radio station into a competitive position in the Capital City, is leaving for Vancouver’s The Beat. Curtis is no stranger to Vancouver, having been music director at Z.95 FM (now Crave FM)…

Victoria producer/arranger/performer David Foster is presenting Josh Groban, Michael Bublé and others in concert at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on September 23rd. It is being videotaped for broadcast on PBS… Local icon Michael J. Fox will be honoured this month by the University of British Columbia. He will be given an honourary degree during Spring convocation. Olympian Clara Hughes, architect Bing Thom, and seven others will be honoured during six days of ceremonies between May 21st and 28th… Soul singer Al Wilson (Show & Tell), 68, has passed away. Also Paul Davis, 60, has died. Davis survived a shooting incident in Nashville in 1986. He charted 15 hits over the years, including his biggest number I Go Crazy in 1977 and ‘65Love Affair in 1982… Spring is always award time and at the recent Edward R. Murrow International RTNDA Competition Global BC was selected for Best Newscast, Best Spot News and for overall excellence, due in no small part to Tony Parsons and Chris Gailus… Meanwhile, the RTNDA Regional Conference saw the Best Use of New Media Award go to News 1130 for their website. The Dave Rogers Award -short feature – went to Mike Lloyd for The Offbeat. This award recognizes Mike’s humour features on the outlet… CKNW won 4 awards at the conference. Philip Till won for Best Editorial. Jon McComb and Jennifer Pelat won for Fight Back Fridays, Christy Clark and Susan Neal won for Flashpoint Immigration, and Rebecca Scott was recognized for Remembrance Day. Congratulations to all… A nice note from reader Jill Payne pointing out that a fundraising concert will be held to benefit the B.C. Centre for Ability in Burnaby on June 24th at the Michael J. Fox Theatre. Kalan Porter (season 2 Canadian Idol winner) will be doing a concert to support the charity. Tickets at 604-664-8875…
