Bobby Helms, “Jingle Bell Rock”

Jingle bell time is a swell time to rock the night away… with “Red’s Animated Advent Calendar”, a series of animated YouTube videos celebrating the holiday season.

Bobby Helms was riding high on the CKWX chart this week in 1957 with his #1 country ballad “My Special Angel” when he released perennial Christmas favourite “Jingle Bell Rock”. Listeners rated Bobby ahead of “Twenty-Six Miles” by The Four Preps and “At The Hop” by Danny and the Juniors on my Teen Canteen Survey in The Vancouver Sun.

Bobby wasn’t a big fan of “Jingle Bell Rock”: “I really didn’t want to cut it because it was such a bad song. So me and one of the musicians worked on it for about an hour putting a melody to it and we put a bridge to it.” The song sold more than 100 million copies over the years.
