George Thorogood, The Chessmen, Beach Boys

It has been another busy week. Thursday I emceed the George Thorogood and the Destroyers concert at the Red Robinson Show Theatre.  On Friday I interviewed George for an update as I had  interviewed him two years ago. His latest, titled Dirty Dozen, refers to his 12 new tracks. In addition to the CD he has ordered up a limited supply of vinyl copies. They will be collectors’ items but George said he did it because he loves holding a vinyl LP and listening to the sounds on vinyl.

It was reunion time at the Hamilton Street Grill with the launch of Larry Hennessey’s latest project for his Regenerator Records company.  It has taken Larry and Jamie Anstey a year or more to put together a compilation of all the Chessmen songs. Guitarist Guy Sobell and Terry Jacks were there along with many members of the original band. It is a treat to hear the hits they produced in the mid Sixties, songs such as Meadowlands, The Way You Fell and Mustang.

The Chessmen were one of  the first Vancouver rock and roll bands to get a major U.S. label contract. That was so important in the days before CanCon rules and as program director of C-FUN I made sure their music got airplay and exposure for the band… no one from government ordered me to do it!

Both interviews will appear on Red’s Reunion on Global TV very soon.

Saturday night saw me on stage at the River Rock Show Theatre to introduce the Beach Boys. It was C-FUN 104.9fm night and what better band to represent the station with all that Fun, Fun, Fun.  It was old home week meeting up with group members Mike Love and Bruce Johnston. They did not disappoint, playing all  their major hits.  If they played every hit they charted the show would have ended at three in the morning! They are still one of the  biggest draws for casinos everywhere.
