Happy Birthday, Mel Cooper!

My friend Mel Cooper turns 80 on December 10. I have known Mel since 1957. I joined CKWX and Mel left for CKNW so we never got to work together. I often wondered if my appearance at the station made him decide to leave for greener pastures! We have remained friends throughout all these years. When Mel gave up the General Manager’s job at CKNW in 1974, he left for Victoria where he purchased C-FAX 1070. Mel immediately got involved in the community with his news team, public service, and personal involvement with many local charities. He volunteered to be on the board of directors of many Victoria companies and government initiatives.

C-FAX soared to the top and it remained there until the day he decided to sell his assets and move on in 2005. He stayed in Victoria and he is still active in many local events. Mel’s energy level is incredible and his commitment to the community has never waned. The Times-Colonist newspaper recently saluted Mel with a fascinating glimpse into the dedicated broadcaster’s career. Like an expensive diamond, his story has many facets. He was awarded the Order of B.C. and the Order of Canada for his many accomplishments.

Happy Birthday Mel!
