Honeymoon Suite, Lee Aaron, Irish Rovers at the “Red”

Honeymoon Suite came to the Red Robinson Show Theatre recently. The band is from Niagara Falls, also known as the Honeymoon Capital. These guys have a loyal following, you might even suggest that it is a cult following. All in all a most enjoyable evening.

The opening act was Lee Aaron, a wonderful singer who lives here in the city. I asked Lee if she tours a lot and she said “With my young family I try not to be on the road too much.” The lady has her priorities straight.

The Irish Rovers came to the Red Robinson Show Theatre on, of all days, St. Patrick’s Day. I took along my friend Dave Abbott and his lovely wife Diane. What could be more Irish than Dave? For many years on both CJOR and CKNW he was a most entertaining on-air host. He still writes for many periodicals and is the past president of the International Travel Writers Guild.

I had a wonderful interview with Irish Rovers leader George Millar. The group came from Ireland and was formed in Calgary in 1963 with their first hits coming soon after. The Unicorn was  written by Shel Silverstein, who also wrote the Johnny Cash treasure A Boy Named Sue. They got their name from the old Irish folk song The Irish Rover. I asked the audience if they remembered The Unicorn on the EXPO 86 site during the World’s Fair time in our city. The crowd responded wildly.  They fondly remember their long running  CBC-TV series The Irish Rovers.

When Jimmy Ferguson died in 1997 a  big part of their band disappeared too. This is not to say they can’t perform well.  They do a splendid job with the various  replacement members of the group who are very fine musicians. The mirth, the fun,and the dancing was evident at the theatre and a good time was had by all.
