“I Remember When Rock Was Young”

Back in the 1950’s when rock and roll began, I would hold dances everywhere – except in Vancouver due to a WWII ban on young people attending public dances. It was a no-fun city even then! It all began in 1955, when I took my records to Duncan on Vancouver Island at the request of my dear friend Mike Hanson. He was President of the school council. Over 1,000 kids showed up. This gave me incentive to do more. I went from playing records to bringing in acts like Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Conway Twitty, Donnie Brooks, Johnny and Dorsey Burnette, Dick and DeeDee, Jerry Lee Lewis and others. We played on Vancouver Island and in the Fraser Valley, with acts like Robin Luke and Ritchie Valens we moved across the border to Washington state. These were fun times, and as you can see from this poster the admission was $1. Oh, how times have changed… but our expectations were small compared to today’s youth. Regardless, we had lots of fun.
