Mail: Hi-Los, Marvin Gaye, C-FUN on FM

Red, I am delighted you continue to entertain Vancouver and surrounding areas, now on your Sunday morning show. Why should you be surprised – you are a music icon, you have met everybody worth meeting in the music world, imagine – Elvis and the Beatles! I know you started when you were just a kid.

I wonder if you remember a group in earlier days than you, called the Hi-Lo’s?  They sang songs like Swing Low and My Sugar is So Divine. I recently saw a movie they were in called Calypso Heat Wave. They were fantastic, I did manage to find those two mentioned songs online. I posted them on my Facebook page – and everyone loves them!  Do you remember – they would have been around long before you and I, but were really one of the first rock and roll sounds, I think. Just curious, you know darn near everything else!

Keep on going Red, I assume you do this more for the joy of it now, and it is so appreciated.

Billie

Billie, of course I remember the Hi-Los. They and the Four Freshmen were two of my favorite singing groups. I even used the Hi-Los’ Georgia On My Mind back in 1954 for a commercial for a record store.  Their harmony was second to none.

Hi Red, while listening to the 6 o’clock news tonight regarding April Fool’s Day it brought to mind a prank you pulled back in the late 50’s, I believe it was, and that I’m sure you’ll recall. You broadcast that during an excavation of Granville street it was discovered  that a rare prehistoric mammal had been dug up. You called it “Loof Lirpa” (April Fool spelled backward). People were flocking to the site to see it. I found it very funny how individuals could be so easily deceived. Just a bit of trivia.

Gerry Paxon

Gerry, I remember it so well and others too.

Hi Red, Happy belated birthday. I am sure you had a wonderful time but I wanted to wish you well and say how great it is to have you on the radio still. I grew up listening to you and it just makes me feel at “home” to hear you on Sundays.

I am not sure if you know that the late, great, MARVELOUS Marvin Gaye would have celebrated his 71st birthday on April 1st. He was absolutely one of my favourite singers of all time. I met him at the Cave when he was here in the 60’s and have his autograph. I treasure it always. He had a treasure trove of hits and I was wondering if you could dedicate some time on your show to Marvin. Songs like Pride and Joy (one of my favourites) and Wonderful One and Ain’t that Peculiar and on and on.

I would be grateful if you could play some of his old songs. I know people remember What’s Going On and Sexual Healing, but I am not sure if they are aware of some of these fabulous songs from the 60’s. I was very much into R&B and Soul back in the day and another one of my favourites was Brenda HollowayEvery Little Bit.

I also have an idea for your Compare The Hits segment. How about this one:  Bring the Boys Home by Freda Payne and Bring the Boys Home by Jann Arden.

LOVE YOUR SHOW.

Laura McDiarmid

Laura, thanks for the greetings and I have taken note of your comparison.  Thanks for being there.

Happy belated birthday Red. Love your show on Sunday mornings.

Jeanette

Red, HI from Courtenay! Been a fan of yours since the C-FUN days! No matter where I went in life, and lived in many different places in BC, you & I shared the same love of music.  So I think it’s fair to say I lived vicariously through listening to you and your History of Golden Oldies… now I am one!

I have a question for you.  Remember the song, with the line “Did without you before I met ya, goin’ to get along without you now”? Who sang it and do you know the lyrics or where I can get them?

On another NOTE… I heard C-FUN on FM from Abbotsford last week. 104 I think. Is it new owners… new format etc. What’s the scoop?

Sherry

Sherry, Rogers Radio bought the call letters after the old CFUN became a sports station with new call letters. I am on the air each Sunday from 8 am to 2 pm with my show Red Rock Diner. The song you are referring to is Gonna Get Along Without You by Patience and Prudence. You can get a copy from Neptoon Records in Vancouver: 604-684-2385.  Dial my show Sunday on that Abbotsford station as I broadcast on it also. Thanks for the email.
