Paul Anka At The “Rock”, Buddy Guy At The “Red”

That’s entertainment. Two musical greats appeared in Vancouver over the weekend. Friday April 15 saw Paul Anka take to the stage at the River Rock Show Theatre. Paul has one of the most incredibly professional shows on planet Earth. It is funny, fast moving and the music is recognized by everyone. He is the consummate showman and involves his audience.

This man could just sit home and clip coupons with the royalties he has made from movie soundtracks (The Longest Day) TV (The Tonight Show Theme) and commercials  (Kodak’s Times Of Your Life)… not to mention the multitude of hits: It Doesn’t Matter Anymore for Buddy Holly, She’s A Lady for Tom Jones and of course My Way for Frank  Sinatra. Paul is truly one of the last of his kind.

It was also a great  pleasure to meet Buddy Guy for the first time. He is often copied but never duplicated. He is in a very small group of exceptional guitarists such as B.B. King and Eric Clapton who both inducted Buddy into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is just plain amazing to watch. No one can do music on a guitar like Buddy. He hasn’t lost it, as a matter of fact like a good wine he gets better with age. For me it was a truly remarkable weekend.
