Paul Horn, 1930-2014

Paul Horn, who played behind some of this century’s musical giants, has died at 84. He played alongside Frank Sinatra, and knew the Beatles. Paul was born in New York. He was a star on flute, clarinet and saxophone. A triple threat you might say. A 1969 tour with folk singer Donovan brought Paul to Vancouver. During that tour he visited Victoria and it became home base for the musician. Paul’s 1968 album Inside was recorded in the Taj Mahal while Horn was with the Beatles in India. It has sold over one million copies.

Nearly a decade ago he began a relationship with singer-songwriter Ann Mortifee. They were married within a year. They had met in 1973 when Paul was hosting the Paul Horn Show on CTV. He had an amazing career. In his early professional years he joined Tony Bennett, Nat “King “Cole, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington for concert tours and recording sessions. Our sympathies go out to Ann Mortifee and her family. He will be greatly missed.
