Pink Martini, Ola Onabule in Vancouver

During the recent Vancouver International Jazz Festival it was my honour to emcee the Pink Martini concert at the Orpheum Theatre featuring vocalist China Forbes and leader Thomas M. Lauderdale on piano. They were accompanied by a 51 piece orchestra. It was a stirring spectacular. Actually, they were trying for a 54 piece orchestra but there was not enough room on the Orpheum stage to accompany the musicians. Their music is a mix of Latin and American jazz. It is a great experience to witness.

Another incredible performer who took part in the festival is Ola Onabule. Ola was born in the U.K. but lives in Nigeria. He was the only performer present at the Posh Spice – David Beckham wedding in Los Angeles at a closed ceremony. His latest CD is The Devoured Man, inspired by the suffering of the people on the African continent, and the lack of any kind of leadership. I had a memorable interview with Ola and found him to be not only direct with his answers, he also had a great inherent sense of humour. He sent these photos to me as a keepsake of our encounter at O’Douls Restaurant, one of the headquarters for the festival. A true delight!
