Red Around Town: August 2

Burnaby music star Michael Bublé has ended his relationship with academy award winning actress Emily Blunt. The situation seems amicable, as they are apparently wishing the best for each other. In recent weeks Michael has been seen in the company of other ladies during his visits to Vancouver… Former members of the Kitsilano Boys Band put on an 80th anniversary concert at the Kits Showboat. Dal Richards tells me over lunch that it was a thrill to be part of the celebration, and that he was particularly pleased to use the baton of the band’s founder, Arthur Delamont to conduct the group. Two other former members of the band joined the group on stage. Bill Millerd, Artistic Director of the Arts Club Theatre, played drums, and billionaire Jimmy Pattison blew some notes on his famous coronet… Bobby Ackles and his family were saluted in a celebration of life at the Century Plaza Hotel in the Beyond Restaurant. The closed affair was a turnout of the who’s who in this town from sports, to politics, to entertainment and the business community. It was a testament to this special man who touched so many. Tributes came from Senator Larry Campbell, Attorney General Wally Oppal, B.C. Lions CEO David Braley, “Dr. Sport” Greg Douglas, Dennis Skulsky of Canwest Media, coach Wally Buono, sons Steve and Scott Ackles, and their mom Kay, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, long time director of the club Jack Farley, auto mogul Moray Keith, and Bobby’s right hand man, George Chayka. Our condolences to Kay and the members of her family. It is truly a great loss…

As expected, the 20th anniversary party for Larry & Willy at the Red Robinson Show Theatre was a hilarious affair. Many special guests were on hand to “roast” the dynamic duo. The best came from their morning newsman Kerry Marshall and talent manager Bruce Allen. A surprise guest was flown in from Winnipeg. It was Willy’s father, Don Percy, who at one time worked here at CISL as morning man. The audience was made up of a veritable menu of media mavens and mavericks. I had an interesting conversation with Roy Hennessy, one time program director of CKLG and ace deejay. He is proud to be General Manager of a newly granted license for radio in our town labelled The Shore, which should hit the airwaves next Spring… A famous star from another time has passed on. Evelyn Keyes, who played Scarlett O’Hara’s younger sister in Gone With The Wind and counted movie director John Huston and bandleader Artie Shaw among her famous husbands, has died at 91… Vicki Gabereau, formerly host of her own CTV show, is back on CBC Radio. She is hosting Sunday Edition on CBU 690 each Sunday morning. Al Ferraby, who hosts the Wake Up Team on CFAX 1070 in Victoria each morning, had the honour of flying to Toronto and representing BC media in the Canadian Idol Media Idol finals; Al has an outstanding singing voice. Still in Victoria, Kool FM morning host Frankie Hollywood is moving to Halifax where his family lives. Another departure is that of Steve Ireland, who is gone from the newsroom. It’s starting to sound as if the captain of the ship is steering in the wrong direction.
