Vancouver was one of only three cities Elvis Presley played outside the United States, and the Empire Stadium show was the last performance he ever gave outside the U.S. Vancouver’s first rock-and-roll show had taken place barely a year before, when Bill Haley and the Comets drew 6,000 people to the Kerrisdale Arena. Now Elvis had drawn a crowd over four times larger. This historic shot of Elvis, me and newsman Bruno Cimolai was taken at Elvis’ press conference on August 31, 1957. Bruno and I had a great working arrangement and we even put out a record, a take off of The Flying Saucer, which incorporated many of the hit songs of the day. At the time of the photo Bruno was at CBC and I had joined CKWX.
