Red Around Town: July 12

Word from inside CKNW is that the Christy Clark Show has won the inaugural National Peter Czowski Award for the Best News Information Program for Flashpoint Immigration. The subject picked as the best in this particular category for all of Canada featured Ms. Clark interviewing Bruce Allen. The award was given at the annual Radio and Television News Directors Association of Canada. CKNW’s Philip Till won the National award from radio and television news directors across Canada for his commentary My Wife. Congratulations to all involved… Believe it or not, she has never been to Vancouver, but Carol Burnett will appear Thursday September 18th at the Orpheum Theatre. This program is a conversation with the star where the audience asks the questions, much like she used to do on her highly rated television series of yore… I was busy during the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and had the pleasure of taking in the Herbie Hancock show at the Orpheum Theatre. As they say in show business, he came to play and play he did. At the after meet and greet he said he was pumped because of the terrific response from our citizens in the audience… I also met and interviewed Cowboy Junkies and a lounge band from Portland, Oregon called Pink Martini. All in all, a most winning series again this year… Dwight Yoakam came to the Red Robinson Show Theatre and displayed his many talents with a mix of rockabilly and country music for which he is famous. The sold-out crowd of fans brought him back for an encore, which he seldom does. He also dedicated a song to me in memory of Elvis Presley and thanked me for bringing him to Vancouver. What a treat…

Congratulations to Tony Parsons, the revered news anchor at Global Television who is slowly winding down his career. Tony was honoured at B.C.I.T. in recent weeks with an Honorary Doctor of Technology award. He was selected for his professional accomplishments, his volunteer work over the years and as a guest lecturer at the institute. Well deserved and kudos to B.C.I.T for recognizing this amazing talent… Cyd Charisse, the Texas beauty who danced with the Ballet Russe as a teenager and starred in a myriad of MGM musicals with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly has died at the age of 86. She also formed a song-and-dance partnership on television and in nightclub appearances with her husband, singer Tony Martin. She and Tony were married for 60 years almost a record in the entertainment world. She will be missed, as will comedian George Carlin, who died at age 71 following a long struggle with health problems including a heart condition. He was well known for over half a century for his social commentary and wit. He was perhaps most famous for his “seven words you can’t say on television”… Vancouver Giants owner Ron Toigo is delighted that his team at last will have a permanent home. The team has entered a three-year broadcasting agreement with Astral Media. All 72 Giants regular season and playoff games will be broadcast on Superhits 650 CISL. Last year the play-by-play broadcasts were all over the map, making it difficult for fans to follow the action on radio.
