November mailbag

Hi Red, I had the pleasure of meeting you many years ago a charity fun run for old classic cars. It was hosted by the Lions Club sponsoring Easter Seals. It started out at the Guildford Shopping Centre in Surrey and this would have been around 1997.

And around that time the 3 act play Red Rock Diner opened at the Arts Club Theatre. It ran for a couple of seasons and then ended. But reappeared in 2002 in a theatre on Granville Street I think at the Vogue. We were with 3 other couples and you were in the audience, front row as I recall. It was a great show and I was wondering if you know of any plans for it to be staged again locally?

By the way, Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story is being put on by the Arts Club next spring. I did see it in 1990 in Toronto at the Pantages and it was superb. Waited a long time for it to finally arrive in Vancouver. And I still have my well worn 33 1/3 LP, The Buddy Holly Story.

I do so much enjoy your Sunday radio show on 104.9. And it’s not just the songs but the music knowledge and trivia that you bring. My lady and I listen as we enjoy our champagne brunch!

I grew up in Oshawa in the 1950’s and listened to CHUM radio. But my favourite was Dick Biondi at WKBW out of Buffalo New York. I think he then moved to Chicago and I’m sure that was a move up and just plain good to get out of Buffalo!

Douglas Kinton

Douglas, I remember that 1997 Cruise for Timmy put on by the B.C. Lions Society. I wish the producers would bring back Red Rock Diner. It played across Canada and into the U.S. My wife Carole and I travelled with it for the major centres like Toronto and Kansas City. Carole and I saw “Buddy” in London England a few years back. Thanks for listening to my Sunday show.  As an added note, I am in touch with Dick Biondi all the time. He is still on the air in Chicago. Keep in touch.

Hi Red, did I hear you say you have been in the business 55 years? Boy, that is quite an acomplishment, you should be proud. Congratulations! I remember watching you on Red’s Classic Theater every Sunday night on KVOS and the stories and anecdotes you had about the actors and actresses in the movie were fascinating. I look forward to hearing you every Sunday.

Keep up the great work

Hi Red, just to let you know since you went to some effort for me, I did find the song I Wonder by Rosemary Clooney. The album was Rosie Swings Softly on the Verve label, 1960. Thanks for looking. (Now all I need is to find where I can get a copy, the album is also obscure) It is also on disk 2 of a box set out of Germany (I think) on the Bear Family label.

Ron Knight

Ron, I met Rosie years ago and did an interview with her. She was a wonderful person with a great attitude considering she was married to a brute of a man who beat her constantly.

Hiya Red, I love listening to your show every Sunday. I watched the documentary on the Monty Python’s Flying Circus show and one of the episodes was the making of The Holy Grail. I was surprised to hear that Elvis was nuts about that movie. He saw it over 45 times; apparently he couldn’t get enough of it. Whoda thunkit. Have a great day and keep the tunes coming.

David

David, Elvis had a great sense of humor.

Hello Red, We listen to your show almost every weekend, and this last Sunday you played a song and  we would really like to know the artist’ s name. The song lyrics go; Give me one kiss and I’ll be happy, just to be with yoooou. Give me, give me a chance to be near you, because, because I love you. Thank-you for your wonderful music ministry, We Love You Red.

Kent and Ruth, friends from the old Riley Park neighbourhood

Kent, the song is Because with the Dave Clark 5.

Hi Red just had to send an email to you. I have listened to you for years, I am 51 so I guess as long as I can remember, first of all I have to say that we are lucky to have you in our lifetime now! You are a wealth of music knowledge that I don’t think anyone could match or ever will. I love the stories that you talk about so much so I don’t get much work done on my only day off… so Red thank you for being who you are and all the hard work you do to bring music and music history to us!

Dave Boxrud

Red, I really enjoy listening to you on Sundays from 8 to 2, but having you play Michael Bublé on Compare The Hits made your show even better. I am one of the many who purchase his CD’s as soon as they come out and are never disappointed. I wish more stations would play more of the songs on this CD instead of only the one. I guess we have to give them time. Thanks for all the stories, interviews etc etc KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

Sandy Gauld

Hi Sandy, thanks for the nice words. I will keep them spinning.
