Portland Bandstand, 1959

This historic 1959 photo was taken on the set of Portland Bandstand at KGW-TV in Portland, Oregon. It was originally hosted by great Portland deejay Dick Novak. Dick was caught up in a major change at KGW Radio, where he had been the morning man. He was replaced by former CKWX morning man Bill Davis, and I took over the 2 to 6 pm afternoon radio show. I had not known about the show changes as management kept it a secret.

Portland Bandstand lasted but 4 months with me as host and was cancelled. It never quite got the numbers that sister station KING-TV in Seattle enjoyed with Seattle Bandstand. At least it gave me some TV experience that I could not get in Canada as in Vancouver there was only CBC-TV.

This photo shows me with co-host Glenna Page, who had also co-hosted with Dick Novak. I am basically off camera as Glenna is talking directly into the camera. The frown was brought on by a look from the floor director to get ready for a new bit when Glenna had completed her pitch. Portland Bandstand was sponsored by Coca-Cola.
